MTV’s PRElection Starts Today

For the last few months, MTV.com has been holding registration for their PRElection. You need to check this thing out—and vote in it. In mid-October, MTV is going to release the results of the PRElection—possibly indicating which way the youth vote will go on Election Day.

For people who register for the PRElection, MTV hooks you up with email updates about the candidates and relevant election issues, surveys and polls for you to fill out about what matters to you, and opportunities for prizes and free music downloads.

Not only can you register for the PRElection, but we set it up with MTV so you can also register for the presidential election with the same form. Rock the Vote has been a partner for this campaign since the beginning.

Well, thousands have registered, and PRElection time is here. As of today, if you’re registered on MTV.com, you can go ahead and vote in the PRElection. They plan to post the results in mid-October, and those results are sure to get some attention from the candidates as they start to get nervous about which way the youth vote will swing. They realize an “endorsement” from PRElection voters will go a long way toward reaching the growing number of young people who intend to vote in November.

Together with MTV, we’re making sure the youth voice gets louder and louder as we near the election.

I recently recieved a politically charged email from my mother that alarmed me and I wanted to post it and my response just to share it. These are views that my mom doesn't necessarily take to heart but the fact that she forwarded it to me lent to the idea that she might. That's the real scary thought.

Read if you would like and know that my response is my own and I pride myself in having friends that think for themselves even if the opinions don't match my own, politically or otherwise. So, let it be known that I won't hold anyone's strong personal beliefs against them and I hope you all treat mine the same way. But it's alright if you don't. I still love you! ; )

*The email I recieved:

Subject: Re: Who IS Barack Obama?

Who is Barack Obama?
Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black Muslim from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white atheist from Wichita,Kansas.
Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii.
When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father Returned to Kenya.
His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a radical Muslim From Indonesia.
When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia.
Obama attended a Muslim school in Jakarta.
He also spent two years in a Catholic school.
Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim.
He Is quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but
that he also attended Catholic school."
Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that
Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best.
In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the
divorce, and never again had any direct influence over His son's education.
Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham,
introduced his stepson to Islam.
Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta. Wahabism is the
radical teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now
waging Jihad against the western world.
Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when seeking
Major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined
the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim
background.

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential
candidacy.
Please forward to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they
plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than
at the highest level.

*My response:

Mom,

No this does not offend me persay, I just worry that this kind of email is how people make their judgement on a presidential candidate or any human for that matter.

I hope that if I ever go into politics, the world does not chastise me for my Mormon background and upbringing when I did not have any say in it as a child. It could happen that the world could turn on it's heel and Mormons were the hated faith, distrusted with the blindness that "we" are showing anyone who might have a tie to a religion that some fanaticists claim as thier own even as the religious leaders denounce them. What if the Reformed Church of Jesus Christ of LDS were the ones responsible for the tragedies and you were wrongly being persecuted and connected to such horrible acts. What if you were in a position that could help bridge a gap that is threatening unity and promoting fear yet you couldn't get your message through because of a prejudice already labelled on you before your first word was out?

This email is full of information that really reveals nothing about Barack Obama's character, his political views, or his spirituality. It has the subtle earmarks of racism and anti-anything but christianity. It also is steeped in opinions that are slipped in to be read as facts: Obama "takes great care to conceal the fact that he is muslim"? If he doesn't practice, is he still muslim? Am I still Mormon? Does it matter? His political handlers are "attempting to make it appear" ... And that he joined the United Church of Christ "in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background"?! That is an opinion of the writer! How would you feel if someone attacked your reasons for converting to LDS in such a manner? God forbid a muslim have an active spirituality AND convert to christianity! Who wrote this? Maybe that is where suspicion should be placed!

This author said that the terrorists seek to destroy us from the inside out and you fear a Trojan Horse. I am beginning to believe that the Trojan Horse is not a physical thing but a rather a state of mind that has already begun to rear it's ugly head. The destruction has already begun: "THEY" are succeeding by relying on our quickness to judge, point, mistrust, and breed suspicion based on race, religion, and blind trust in people that tell us that everything is under control and not to worry. Just worry about your dark skinned, evil neighbor with the turban. Don't trust him, don't believe a word he says. He might be one of Them. The most efficient, tried and true military method is "divide and conquer" correct? Well, in one fell swoop, these terrorists are psychological geniuses as they have brutally planted the seeds of fear and have helped us move backward in time as a country to pre-civil rights mentalities. Only this time it's not just a race issue, it's a religious issue. These terrorists are trying to drag us into the Dark Ages and into a backwards Crusade and we, as a country, are willingly following them.

I found a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose eloquence and ability to cut through the buzzing of the mind and straight to the heart is unmatched:

"Through our scientific and technological genius, we have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical commitment to make of it a brotherhood. But somehow, and in some way, we have got to do this. We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all perish together as fools. We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. And you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the way God's universe is made; this is the way it is structured.

John Donne caught it years ago and placed it in graphic terms: "No man is an island entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." And he goes on toward the end to say, "Any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." We must see this, believe this, and live by it if we are to remain awake through a great revolution."

--Martin Luther King, Jr., Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution

To remain awake..... His words made me cry actually. But however inspired I am by them, my tears were mostly shed because our nation is not living up to his expectations. Dr. King truly believed in and loved America despite all of the hate and distrust and blind prejudice. Everything he stands for is being chipped away at with the closed-mindedness portrayed in emails like these that slant and divert the real issues we should be looking at politically. Our nation is strong but we are turning arrogant, stubborn and intolerant to the fundamental moral standards that should Never be compromised.

I believe Dr. King would be saddened at our reaction of division and suspicion instead of becoming stronger and more unified as a nation in the wake of such tragedy. Every breath he took until his last encouraged the banishment of suspicion, hate bred by fear, preached racial and religious tolerance, equality, and most of all love. And he was a Christian.

I looked up some quotes of Mohammed, the founder of Islam and found it to be wonderfully similar not only to Dr. Kings quotes but mirroring Jesus Christ's teachings as well:

"The creation is as God's family; for its sustenance is from Him: therefore the most beloved unto God is the person who doeth good to God's family.

That person is not of us who inviteth others to aid him in oppression; and he is not of us who fighteth for his tribe in injustice; and he is not of us who dieth in assisting his tribe in tyranny."

I wonder if the writer of this email that you forwarded has ever spoken to a practicing Muslim or opened the Quran to get a better idea of Islam instead of blindly following religious bigots to jump off the cliff of prejudice. I wonder how hard it was for an average american white man or woman in the 50's to shake hands with a black and look him in the eye as an equal.

Mom, I love you. I respect your caution. But Please, Please don't let the fear settle and take root. I was just bragging to a friend of mine how you would have us watch the presidential debates and then you would ask us questions like, "What did you think of that question? How did you like his answer? What would you have said if asked? Who do you think would make the best president? Why?"

We need to stay objective, we need to ask questions, we need to come to our own answers not someone else's! You taught me that. You also taught me religious tolerance, racial tolerance and above all, to not judge someone by another's opinion but to create the opinion myself. In this case, we can't meet Obama and get a 'feel' for him in person, look into his eyes and seek trust that way. Of course not. But, possibly bringing to mind the state we have been in as a nation since there became someone to blame for the 9/11 attacks might be a good place to start. If we are constantly looking over our shoulder, we might not see an outstretched hand in front of us.

To humor me, since you are to "blame" for your opinionated, headstrong and constantly inquiring daughter, can you forward my response to those that received this email from you? For the sake of balance.

Forever Loving,

Brenna

My mother and I challenge each other's opinions and perspectives all the time and that is one thing that keeps us close. That isn't why I am posting this. I became hyper-aware, at the moment of reading the forwarded email, of the constant human struggle with the sheep mentality, the deep desire to just let our consciousness go with the flow of everyone else and let propoganda take control.

I guess I just want to urge everyone to stay alert; not suspicious of everyone and put our gaurds up against anyone with an opposing view but, rather to stay alert and mindful of our priviledge to think for ourselves.

Thanks for reading,

~B
